Following an absolutely devastating 1957 flood, the city executed one of the most brilliant cartographic engineering feats in history by violently diverting the massive Turia River completely around the metropolis. The dry, winding riverbed was radically transformed into the Turia Gardens—a sprawling, 9-kilometer-long sunken green park that snakes perfectly through the entire urban grid.
