About London
London grew organically from two original Roman settlements, Londinium (the City of London, now the Square Mile) on the northern bank of the Thames, and Southwark on the south. The Thames, tidal within the city and cutting a wide dramatic curve through its heart, remains the central axis of the map. The City of London, at just one square mile, retains its ancient Roman boundary, clearly visible as a dense cluster of tall buildings that ends abruptly at its historic edge.
